How and Why to use Fish Sh!t
Many of you might have received a free sample bottle of Fish Sh!t with your recent order. This is a brief explanation as to how and why Rooted Rarities has been so adamant about using it and its potential for aroids and tropical plants.
What is Fish Sh!t?
Fish Shit is an organic soil conditioner that utilizes composted fish manure to promote a massive uptick in good bacteria, mineralization, and plant nutrients.
Why does that help my plant?
Similar to the reason people add worm castings to their soil, which adds nutrients to the media your plant is potted in, fish shit adds an entire ecosystem of beneficial bacteria, over 4,000 types of microbes, and boosts mineralization in your medium. Which not only strengthens your plant's roots, greatly reduces the chances of root rot, and increases your plants nutrient uptake, but it also acts as a biocontrol agent which helps fight off parasites, plant disease, and yes even pests like thrips, scale, mealy's and spider mites.
On top of all those benefits, Fish Shit is NOT a fertilizer and has NO available NPK. (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium) which means it can be used in conjunction with ANY fertilizer you have/use. In fact, we recommend continuing your regularly scheduled fertilization practices like you would normally.
How did Rooted Rarities find Fish Shit? and why are you giving out samples for free?
About a year ago, I was at my friend's house who grows cannabis (legally) and I saw the bottle and laughed at the name, so I asked about it. He mentioned that since he started using it on his plants, he's seen insane growth, a huge reduction of pests, and his plants were much healthier overall. So I asked if he knew whether or not that would be beneficial to aroids and tropical plants as well? He didn't know, and I wasn't about to just try it with my babies......so I called the company and got a direct line with one of the owners and founder of the company. Tom.
He explained how his Fish Shit worked and how he had mostly sold to the cannabis industry because of his growing background. He was also aware that Fish Shit worked incredibly well for tropicals and aroids, but just didn't have the expertise in house plants or know many people in the industry. So we tried it. First on one or two plants, then on half of our own rares. We noticed the 1/2 that we used Fish Shit when watering showed WAY MORE growth than the other 1/2. Then we noticed the fungus gnats had been all but disappearing as well. After a few months, we were sold.
I reached back out to Tom and explained how crazy the increase was. He was as excited as I was and to get his product into the hands of more people in the plant community he asked if I would send a free sample bottle of Fish Sh!t to every customer I sold a plant to. Immediately I said yes! Of course, I want to help my customer's plants stay healthy and happy! and since, I have only heard amazing things about Fish Shit from everyone.
to use: just add a couple of caps full of Fish Shit for every gallon you water with and watch the difference it makes!
